Are Some People Missing Their Wisdom Teeth?

Third molars are the final set of adult teeth to come in, typically emerging sometime in the late teens to early 20s. For many people, they can cause discomfort when they erupt, but a few patients may be lucky enough to not have them. It may sound surprising, but it’s true. Here’s a closer look at why wisdom teeth don’t always develop, and whether not having them is anything to worry about.

Why Do Some People Not Have Wisdom Teeth?

According to the Dental Research Journey, anywhere from 5% to 37% of people never develop their third molars. Researchers aren’t entirely sure of the exact reason why, though genetics is thought to play a role. That means if your parents never had theirs, there’s a chance you won’t either. Changes in human diet, chewing patterns, and environment over time may also be contributing factors.

Should People Without Wisdom Teeth Worry?

For most people who don’t have wisdom teeth, it’s not a cause for concern at all. In fact, it can work out in their favor, since those who do have them often don’t have enough room in their jaw to accommodate them. This can lead to complications like overcrowding or discomfort, which is why so many patients have them extracted.

That said, not being able to see your third molars doesn’t necessarily mean you’re missing them. They could be impacted and haven’t broken through the gumline, or they may be coming in at an angle. Your dentist is the best way to find out exactly what’s going on in your case.

Are Wisdom Teeth Always Removed?

As mentioned, wisdom teeth are a common source of trouble. A few signs that yours may be causing problems include:

  • Worsening discomfort near the tooth, which can start mild and eventually make eating or speaking difficult.
  • Red, swollen gums surrounding the area.
  • Teeth begin to shift, often caused by the pressure of erupting third molars pushing against their neighbors.

Not everyone runs into issues with their wisdom teeth. If you are experiencing any of the above, an extraction is often the most effective way to find relief and avoid further complications down the road.

So, while it’s easy to feel a little envious of those who never had to deal with third molars, your dentist is here to make sure yours don’t cause any lasting trouble. That way, you keep a healthy, pain-free smile.
