Heart disease is the leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. Therefore, doctors are quick to offer advice on steps that can reduce the risk of heart problems. For example, you should stay physically active, eat a balanced diet, and avoid damaging habits like smoking. But there is one key aspect of heart health that you should not overlook — your smile! In this blog post, you will learn more about the fascinating connection between oral health and heart health.

Gum Disease Increases Heart Health Risks

Gum disease is an infection of the soft pink tissue that surrounds the base of your teeth. At first, it might seem like a localized problem, but it can actually have widespread consequences!

When your gums become infected, bacteria can enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. This process may cause inflammation in your blood vessels, which can make it harder for blood to flow smoothly. Over time, this extra inflammation and bacterial presence can contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits in your arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. These blockages can raise your risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.

Steps You Can Take

Gum disease is alarmingly common, but it can be prevented and/or managed! Here are some practical steps you can take to protect your oral health and, by extension, lower your heart health risks:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque and bacteria. Be sure to clean thoroughly along your gumline.
  • Floss every day to clean the tight areas between your teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.
  • Visit your dentist for regular checkups and professional cleanings to catch and treat problems early.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which supports healthy gums and a healthy heart.
  • Avoid tobacco products, since they can raise your risk of gum disease and heart disease.
  • If you choose to drink alcohol, do so only in moderation.
  • Pay attention to signs of gum problems, such as bleeding or swollen gums, and schedule an appointment with your dentist right away if you notice anything unusual.

Protecting your smile is about more than looks — it is a smart way to care for your heart, too. Make your oral health a priority in order to support your overall wellness.
